April 2, 2012-James McRae interview

Rhythm'a'ning

This podcast episode features a jazz portrait of local Nanaimo jazz drummer and composer James McRae. We hear tracks from his latest CD entitled Slow Down recorded with acclaimed Vancouver musicians Jennifer Scott, Rene Worst and Miles Black. A beautiful melodic album with a stunning performance by the entire band. The fantastic interpretation by Jennifer Scott of James McRae's compositions leads to haunting melodies and masterful scatting and prowess by Scott. Do not miss this music and interview.

Due to equipment difficulties and problems with audio that destroyed most of the interview, this podcast is not up to regular CHLY broadcast quality. Hopefully the technical issues will be resolved soon. For this same reason of audio problems the rest of the two hour show was not included in this podcast.

With world class jazz stars from New York and Toronto visiting the town of Nanaimo recently, this show highlights their music. The first hour features saxophonist and composer Quinsin Nachoff's band Forward Motion which just completed their dazzling Canadian Fomo concert tour in Nanaimo at Vancouver Island University. Check out the music from exciting Canadian saxophonist/composer Quinsin Nachoff from his latest album Fomo in this show. Also in the band on the keys/piano is the brilliant Canadian Andy Milne and you get to hear some of his solo work and also from his New York band Dapp Theory in this show.

Andy Milne and Quinsin Nachoff are originally from Ontario, Canada but now reside in New York. The rest of the touring band are New York musicians Dan Weiss on drums and Russ Johnson on trumpet who also wowed the Nanaimo audiences along with Milne and Nachoff with their dazzling musicianship and playing. I have played a lot of New York drummer Dan Weiss in various recordings with New York players like Rudresh Mahanthappa and Rez Abbasi on Rhythmaning on past shows. January 2, 2012-Best of 2011

Rhythm'a'ning

This show features the best jazz, creative and improvised music albums that came into the CHLY music library and were released on to the market in 2011.There is some excellent music out there that was not featured on the show because not all artists and record labels send their music to us here at CHLY. In addition, in a two hour show only so much can be aired. It is impossible to feature all the wonderful musicians in our libary even though so many deserve to be featured for this show. To be fair and accurate this best of 2011 Rhythmaning show is only a slice of what is out there on the market for improvised music. Visit chly.ca to view CHLYs top 200 releases in 2011. If you would like to send your music to Rhythmaning or to CHLY email rhythmaning@chly.ca
